Professor Dong Lou, Head and Chair Professor of Finance at the HKUST Business School, investigates the complex dynamics of asset pricing and market behavior. Recognizing market prices reflect collective global investor actions, his research explores both human behavioral biases and the crucial role of institutional constraints and frictions.
A key insight is the sometimes paradoxical finding that market rules, though often optimally designed, can inadvertently create “funny patterns” in prices and contribute to mispricings, explaining why even sophisticated markets fluctuate. Professor Lou finds particular excitement in uncovering how these systemic frictions cause even “smart institutions” to make mistakes.
His research reaches beyond pure market mechanics to explore finance’s real-world impact. One example is his work showing how “superstar” firm performance influences societal choices like college majors – rooted in his own experience. Currently examining challenges like optimal green finance design and geoeconomic contests, he consistently seeks to understand the vital interplay between financial systems, human behavior, and real-world outcomes.
In today’s unpredictable economic and geopolitical environment, his research provides a timely perspective. Understanding how institutional guard rails and human behavior influence each other is crucial. Professor Lou’s work connects those everyday investment decisions to the larger market movements we see, offering useful insights into both.
