Dr. Timothy Page of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), a composer and lecturer in the Division of Humanities, has been awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition.

Since he arrived at HKUST to teach composition, classical music theory, and ethnomusicology, Dr. Page has been instrumental in the development of music education on campus, designing the University’s first electronic music studio, now housed in Shaw Auditorium. Thanks to the studio, he has been able to develop and teach new courses in electronic music composition that have been very popular with students.

Dr. Page is also Co-Artistic Director of the Cosmopolis Festival, a multigenre music festival that brings high-calibre musicians to campus from Hong Kong and abroad. With the support of HKUST staff, the festival has brought in world-class acts such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Dal Niente (USA), the Chris Carpio Quartet (Hong Kong/Philippines), and Ranjani-Gayatri (India).

For his Guggenheim Fellowship, Dr. Page is composing a piano trio and compiling an album of his chamber music compositions. This album will be professionally recorded by Ensemble Dal Niente in the U.S. and Uusinta Ensemble in Finland.

In both his role as a composer and educator, Dr. Page aims to expand the ways in which listeners can derive meaning from organized sound.
